The store doesn't always have to be your first port of call when you need to buy a big item. Before you check out a store, check out the trading post or visit some garage sales.
It may be, that someone is selling the exact thing you need at a fraction of the price you would be able to buy it in a store. If this is the case then the few minutes spent researching will pay off in a big way.
If the item is a big ticket item, then it may even be worthwhile putting an add in the trading post, or online to see if any one in your local area has the particular item and are willing to sell it.
As you can see there is a whole range of ways you can buy a product without visiting a store. The good news is that a lot of the alternative ways will also be a lot cheaper as well. So next time you are in the market for a big item think about other ways you can go about purchasing it.

We went to Dubai last weekend for my son's sixth birthday. We hadn't been before, but as we live only a short distance away we thought we would check it out. To sum it up in a few words, we would describe it as a true metropolitan city with a lot of glits and glamour, but no real Arabic feel.
Walking around the shops we wondered where all the locals were? Where they living in the other areas and choosing not to come in to the centre? We don't know. What we do know is that local's seemed to be out-numbered by around 20 to 1.
During our say, we went to the Atlantis water park and also Ski Dubai, where the kids had an absolute blast. The accommodation was well priced, the shopping was cheap (well cheaper than Qatar where we live) and almost everyone was friendly. In our opinion definitely worth the visit or a stop through.

Have you thoroughly researched your next big purchase?
If you are in the market for a large item (such as a LCD or Plasma TV), then when you buy it, how you buy it and how you research it makes a difference. Before you commit to a purchase ask yourself the following questions:
Also don't be afraid to barter. This option is still available especially in a bad economy.

- Have you found where you can get the item the cheapest? Have a shop around to find the cheapest price for this particular item.
- Could the price be further reduced if I pay cash?
- Is it likely that the item will be on sale in the near future?
- Are there are models or options that are cheaper that would work just as well?
- Have I researched and found the most appropriate and affordable option for me?
- Can I barter on the price?
Also don't be afraid to barter. This option is still available especially in a bad economy.

Pay off your mortgage fast - one of the best money saving tips around
If you want to seriously save money and increase your disposable, and more importantly your investable income, then pay off your mortgage...fast!
The good thing about paying off your mortgage early is that you are using the power of compound interest almost in reverse to how lenders want you too. Every dollar you pay off early in your morgage could be worth $20 or $30 over the life of your morgage. How is that for leverage.
So we recommend living tight for a few years, following all of our money saving tips to help you do that, and then enjoy the benefits of having a smaller mortgage, or better yet no mortgage at all.
We also recommend avoiding borrowing equity in your house, unless you are using that money for investment purposes (even then it is risky). You are better off saving up money seperately and investing it seperate. Investing alway has risk, and it is a even greater risk when you are using borrowed money. The most risk of course is when that borrowed money is linked to your house!
So be sensible and use your head, pay of your mortgage quickly and don't use the equity in your property to get into debt or buy into the latest hot investment you heard about!

mobile phone costs - how much is your mobile really costing you
The cost of a mobile phone can change dramatically depending on your usage. Therefore it is important to decide what you will actually be using the phone for before you purchase one.
Sit down with a piece of paper and work out how many calls you will be making and how many sms's you will be making in an average month. For your calls you can even work out how much time you will be spend talking.
Next look for packages that fit in with your needs. If you are making 100 minutes of calls a month. See if there is a low cap mobile plan that fits in with this.
It is also worth working out what network most of the calls you make will be on. If 60 percent of your calls are on a particular network, and that network offers free or reduced rates for its own calls, then it is worth considering.
One thing that a lot of people overlook is pay as you go phones. If you are only making a small number of calls, or if the phone is really just for emergencies then this would be a great option for you.
Buying a phone or going onto a mobile plan is a big purchase, and is well worth you taking some time to research it well before you make the leap.
Cheers
