The cost of a mobile phone can change dramatically depending on your usage. Therefore it is important to decide what you will actually be using the phone for before you purchase one.
Sit down with a piece of paper and work out how many calls you will be making and how many sms's you will be making in an average month. For your calls you can even work out how much time you will be spend talking.
Next look for packages that fit in with your needs. If you are making 100 minutes of calls a month. See if there is a low cap mobile plan that fits in with this.
It is also worth working out what network most of the calls you make will be on. If 60 percent of your calls are on a particular network, and that network offers free or reduced rates for its own calls, then it is worth considering.
One thing that a lot of people overlook is pay as you go phones. If you are only making a small number of calls, or if the phone is really just for emergencies then this would be a great option for you.
Buying a phone or going onto a mobile plan is a big purchase, and is well worth you taking some time to research it well before you make the leap.
Cheers
